“What should I wear for my senior portrait session?” Honestly, this question gets asked more than any other. Don’t worry…I’ve got you covered. I’ve compiled four tips for choosing what to wear for portraits, and together we will style a senior session that will produce images you will love!
1. Consider Where You Will Display Your Photos
The first thing you’ll want to consider is where and how you’ll display your portraits. I believe strongly that photos should be displayed. I want your portrait session to be a memory that you will treasure for the rest of your life, and I want you to be reminded of that with heirloom photo art displays that will last for generations.
So let’s plan your session with that goal in mind! If your living room is a sea of cool blues, you may want to consider crafting an outfit that fits into that color scheme. I’d love to help you choose, so if you have items you’re thinking of but not sure, reach out to me and let’s plan together. This is one of my favorite tips for choosing what to wear for portraits!
2. Consider Wearing Solid Colors
The second thing to think about when choosing what to wear for portraits is STICK WITH SOLID COLORS! Stripes, checks, plaids and polka dots might be really fun, but they can be distracting in portraits. We want to showcase your face!
Patterned prints and florals may be hip and current, but twenty years from now you’ll be glad you chose a more classic outfit that draws the eye straight up to your face.
DO choose bright colors, though! Jewel tones and bright reds and blues really make portraits pop! Choose colors that complement one another.
3. Consider Where You Want to Shoot Your Session
Thirdly, determining your shooting location may help drive your wardrobe choices. Want to capture images on the football field where you practiced? Your jersey and a pair of jeans is a great way to tell your story with one powerful image.
Want to walk on the beach where you played as a child? You really want bright colors rather than cool blues or khakis, which could fade into the background of your portrait location. Similarly, if your portrait session is in a forest, you may not want an outfit in shades of green. Choosing what to wear for portraits may be driven in large part by where you want to have them captured.
We want you to stand out!
4. Consider Adding Accessories & Props That Will Tell Your Story
Finally, carefully plan your accessories! Ladies, a cute scarf or hair accessory can add just the right touch. The right jewelry makes an outfit sing.
Think about props that might add to your story! Sports equipment, favorite books and even your car can help to tell the story of who you are and what interests you in ways that regular clothing can’t.
