Back to school looks a little different for us this year. We aren’t airing out school uniforms. We aren’t sitting in a gym getting a parent orientation. Every August since 2004, we have prepared at least one of our children for the first day of school at JCS.
College Campus Portraits
Two years ago, we moved our oldest daughter into her dorm room at Freed-Hardeman University. I was pretty excited to get into town a day early and put together a college campus portraits session with her.
I love capturing portraits that tell visual stories, and this session with Katie really showed her starting-college story. These images show her excitement at starting this new adventure, and even capture a little of her nervousness at the unknown.
She had always known she wanted to attend FHU, but she hadn’t decided on a field of study yet. She’d met some of her professors, and knew a couple of people who were already attending, but she didn’t know yet how her college story was going to play out.
Her friend circle was still an unknown. She didn’t know what club she was going to join. She wasn’t sure yet who she was going to be…but she was excited to find out.
(I, of course, knew she was going to be amazing…)
Here We Are Now…
Here we are two years later, getting ready to move baby sis into a dorm across the street from Katie. We’re doing it all over again.
Katie is just as excited to be back on campus, and now she knows the answer to all those questions. She knows what she wants to do, she’s becoming who she wants to be.
And, as I predicted…She. Is. Amazing.
We are grateful for the influence that Freed-Hardeman University has been on her life, and on ours (Katie’s dad and I met on campus when we attended over 25 years ago). And we’re excited for the experience that Kelly is about to have.
And I am glad that we captured these portraits the day before she moved in to her dorm room two years ago – her story has changed, but these memories will last forever.
